Experimental Video Art

This two-week online intensive is designed to immerse you in the creative possibilities of experimental video art. With lectures, workshops and practical exercises, you will explore the development of ideas, experimentation, production and post-production while discovering new approaches.

About this course

This course has been developed as an immersive introduction to experimental video art, taking you from initial ideas and creative research through to the production of a finished film. You will develop your own concepts, experiment with image and sound, and explore techniques including experimental editing, animation, documentary and found footage. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to take creative risks, move beyond traditional filmmaking methods and develop your own approach to moving image. You will learn through lectures, artist presentations, practical exercises, online workshops and individual feedback, all within a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

About the tutors

Alyona Pimanova

Alyona is an artist and teacher working at Moscow Film School and other institutions. Alyona has over 10 years’ experience as a producer and filmmaker working with international channels and production companies making TV shows and documentaries. Her video art works have been shown in various exhibitions and festivals.

Dan Smith

Dan is a British multimedia artist based in Moscow whose practice has a strong focus on film and audio. He has for over 7 years taught experimental filmmaking at the British Higher School of Art and Design (part of the University of Hertfordshire and now Moscow school of contemporary art) and is head of the Moscow International Video Art Exhibition which is a yearly showcase of video art, experimental film and filmed performance from artists around the world.
