Tella is an online art school dedicated to experimental moving image and creative filmmaking.
We believe that making films doesn't have to begin with a script, a storyboard or a set of rules. It can begin with a sound, an image, an accident, a feeling, a question or simply the desire to experiment.
Our courses give artists and filmmakers the space to explore moving images in different ways - combining practical techniques with creative thinking, experimentation and play. Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or looking for new ways to develop your practice, Tella is a place to experiment, take risks and find your own visual language.

We are interested in what happens when you stop worrying about making a film the “right” way.
Our approach is rooted in experimentation. We encourage students to work with chance, mistakes, repetition, found footage, unusual sounds, unexpected edits, analogue and digital processes, AI, abstraction and whatever else might help an idea take shape.
There are no formulas for making experimental art. Instead, we give you techniques, prompts and creative challenges that help you discover your own way of working.

WHY TELLA?
Tella was founded by artist and filmmaker Dan Smith, who has been teaching experimental filmmaking and digital arts since 2016.
The school grew from years of working with artists and students who wanted to move beyond conventional filmmaking and explore the possibilities of the moving image as an artistic medium.
Tella brings together this teaching experience with an active community of artists, filmmakers and students from around the world.

ARTIST-LED EDUCATION
Tella isn't just about learning techniques. It's about making work.
Each year, student films have the opportunity to become part of a wider international conversation through our annual video art exhibition, alongside work submitted by artists from around the world.
For us, the journey doesn't end when a course finishes. The aim is to give students the confidence and tools to continue making, experimenting and sharing their work and we continue to support students as they build their artistic practice.
